Movie Mondays: The Love Witch

As a film lover and student, I have to say The Love Witch made it's way to the top of my "best movie's of all time" list. I have been scavenging for a movie that would inspire me and keep me entertained the whole way through, and let me tell you, The Love Witch did just that. With it's unique approach on a 60s film produced in the modern day, I find it captivating and refreshing, bringing about an old film style that appears new to those unfamiliar with film classics . It is highly reminiscent on the earlier works of directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Jacques Tourneur, and Joseph H. Lewis (to name a few) who were famous for creating classic hollywood style films. With an essence of film noir and a strong female lead (Femme Fatale), this movie mixes all things suspenseful and sultry.

The Love Witch brings about many noted film topics such as: female empowerment, the over sexualization of women's bodies, men and women's roles in society, and the contrast between the croon and the young beauty. I could go on for days about the many strong topics presented in this film...but then this would turn into a film lovers blog.

I also love the way the film was shot and edited. The technicolor creates a nostalgic old hollywood feel, and the dramatic acting and music help create the full 60s vibe. Can we also talk about how Samantha Robinson epitomizes the classic hollywood starlet? If you don't really know who to picture when you think of what a classic Hollywood film star would be, just think Lana Del Rey and her mod 60s vibe; which is essentially who I think this movie was modeled after, I mean do you see the resemblance here?

I've always been obsessed with old hollywood glam, and Femme Fatale characters who led the roles in many film noir movies, but after watching this I now want to emulate all things Elaine; from her style, to her airy yet empowering presence, and her unforgiving fervor for love, Elaine is one of those main characters you love to imitate.
